October 2026 Yacht Market Report

Strong Summer Sales, More Large Yachts for Sale

California used powerboat market | Reporting through October 15, 2026

October is one of my favorite times of year to be on the water in San Diego. The summer crowds have thinned out, the weather is usually fantastic, and there’s still plenty of boating season ahead.

There’s also some interesting news in the yacht market. California’s reported used powerboat sales finished the summer stronger than the preceding three reporting periods. At the same time, listings above $1 million increased, giving buyers at that level more options.

We missed our September report, so this update covers two sales-reporting periods along with the latest inventory figures, financing, and a few developments worth knowing about. Here’s what we’re seeing.

On Our Radar This Month

  • California summer sales finished ahead of the preceding three reporting periods.
  • September sales rebounded, particularly below $500,000.
  • Listings above $1 million increased nearly 19% since August.
  • Marine financing costs have moved higher.
  • Pre-owned boats continue to account for most reported global sales.
  • Insurance conditions appear to be improving for some owners.

California Boat Sales: A Strong Finish to Summer

From June 15 through September 15, our California market data recorded 225 used powerboat sales, compared with 209 in the preceding three reporting periods. That’s an increase of approximately 7.7%.

The market wasn’t consistently stronger every month. We saw a slowdown in August, followed by a rebound in September. Taken together, though, those three reporting periods finished ahead of the preceding three.

September’s rebound was concentrated below $500,000. Both the $100,000–$250,000 and $251,000–$500,000 categories recorded eight more sales than in August.

My take: Summer activity held up well, particularly in the price ranges where we consistently see the most transactions. I wouldn’t interpret October’s preliminary decline as a confirmed slowdown.

California Inventory: More Choices Above $1 Million

Overall inventory barely moved, but the mix changed. As of October 26, we’re tracking 1,816 active California listings, versus 1,845 in mid-August. The more interesting story is where listings are increasing.

Listings above $1 million climbed from 107 to 127, an increase of approximately 19%, while inventory from $100,000 to $1 million was almost unchanged.

For buyers: More selection at the upper end may create opportunities, particularly among boats that have been listed for a while. For sellers: More competition puts greater importance on pricing, condition, presentation, and marketing. It doesn’t necessarily mean prices are falling.

Financing: What Does a Boat Cost Per Month?

Our lending partner’s October rate sheet reflects higher marine financing costs than we saw this summer. The following are illustrative APR ranges for qualified buyers with 20-year terms:

On a $400,000 boat with 20% down, the amount financed would be $320,000. At 6.49% APR over 20 years, estimated monthly principal and interest is approximately $2,384, excluding taxes, insurance, maintenance, and other ownership expenses.
Actual terms depend on credit, boat age, ownership structure, and lender requirements. We can help connect buyers with marine lenders who understand older vessels, charter use, and certain LLC arrangements.

Pre-Owned Boats Continue to Lead
Boats Group’s September market reporting indicated pre-owned boats accounted for 84% of reported sales worldwide, while total reported sales were up 19.8% compared with September 2025.
The value offered by a pre-owned boat can be compelling, but the best choice depends on intended use, condition, equipment, warranties, and the overall cost of ownership.

Buyers Often Change Direction
In separate Boats Group buyer research, 85% of buyers reportedly purchased a different boat than the one they originally inquired about. That matches what we see in practice: comparing layouts, performance, operating costs, and new versus pre-owned options often changes the conversation.

At the Fuel Dock: Plan Your Fill-Ups
Recent reported pricing at San Diego’s High Seas Fuel Dock was approximately $7.50 per gallon for gasoline, $8.25 for diesel at 1,000 gallons, and in the mid-$9 range for smaller diesel fills. On a larger yacht, the volume discount may make it worthwhile to consolidate fills. Confirm the current rates and applicable terms directly with the dock.

Yacht Insurance: Encouraging Signs
Marine insurance specialists have reported greater competition and capacity, with some rates stabilizing or improving. That won’t apply equally to every boat: vessel age, cruising area, claims history, intended use, and survey recommendations all matter.
If you haven’t reviewed your coverage or requested competing quotes recently, this could be a good time to revisit your options.

What We’re Watching Heading Into Year-End
Two trends stand out. First, summer’s reported sales activity was solid, and we’ll be watching how October develops as more closings are reported. Second, the increase in inventory above $1 million could give buyers more choices while encouraging sellers to pay closer attention to competing listings.

The fundamentals haven’t changed: a properly priced, well-maintained boat with thoughtful presentation is better positioned to sell, and buyers benefit from understanding the market rather than trying to time the perfect month.

Thanks for reading. We publish these reports because better information helps people make better decisions, whether they’re buying, selling, or just keeping an eye on the market. If there’s a topic you’d like us to cover next month, I’d enjoy hearing from you.
